London: A collection of Princess Diana’s most renowned dresses, such as the well-known dark blue Victor Edelstein gown that she used while dancing with John Travolta at the 1985 State Dinner at the White House, sold for a stunning £800,000 pounds (or $1.2 million) at a London public auction today.
The off-the-shoulder, midnight blue velvet gown, designed by Victor Edelstein, was the star lot in a sale of 10 of Diana’s dresses at vintage fashion auctioneers Kerry Taylor Auctions in London.
Auctioneer Kerry Taylor said: “It was purchased by a Uk gentleman who stated he wished to buy it as a surprise to cheer up his wife. I am hoping that the sale has truly made someone’s day.” She added that the new holder of the gown, which reached the top price of the sale, was a “lucky woman”.
The famed dress was expected to sell for £300,000 Yahoo reports.
Nine other dresses, including two of Diana’s Catherine Walker looks, which any single went for £108,000 ($163,090), sold in the auction to various buyers and museums from around the worldwide.
